OUR VILLAGE - NIEDŹWIEDŹ

The Municipality of Niedzwiedz is situated in the southwestern part of the county of Limanowa, in Molopolska voivodeship almost halfway between Cracow and Zakopane. It lies at the foot of the Gorce Range with its highest peak, Turbacz (1310 m a.s.l.) The whole area of Niedzwiedz stretches over Gorce Mountains and a large part of its territory is located within Gorce National Park. Gorce National Park was established in 1981 and currently the area of the Park amounts to 7.030 ha, out of which 3.611 ha are under strict protection. Wildlife lovers as well as other welcome visitors will certainly enjoy the Gorce landscape dominated by mild and domed hills. There are many places where widespread and beautiful panorama at surrounding mountain ranges can be enjoyed with the Tatra Mountains, Babia Gora and Pieniny as the most attractive. There are 3 tourist shelters on Turbacz, Maciejowa and Stare Wierchy that offer a nice and comfortable night's lodging after hiking trip or cycling tour along the mountain ridges. During the winter, the snow is plentiful and numerous cross-country ski trails as well as ski lifts make the area popular among downhill racers and ski runners. The area of the Municipality of Niedzwiedz amounts to 74.44 sq. km and is inhabited by 6.500 people known as Zagorzanie (Highlanders) many of whom still cultivate their traditions, vivid culture, clothes, dialect, music and customs. The Zagorzanie folklore and their way of life were perfectly described in many books by Wladyslw Orkan, a Polish writer who was born in Poreba Wielka in the late 19th century. The clean air, thick forest and the area's specific microclimate make our municipality very attractive to tourists and became one of the most popular holiday destinations. There are a number of pension houses and guest rooms to be found everywhere in the area. Also agrotourism (a farm tourism) is well developed and everyone who likes to spend his holidays in the countryside on an agrotouristic farm with all kinds of activities and sports including horse riding is always welcome here. For amateurs of paragliding we can recommend the top of Potaczkowa (745 m) and Witow (723 m) mountains where you can practice this breathtaking and spectacular sport. The Municipality of Niedzwiedz include 4 villages: Niedzwiedz, Konina, Podobin and Poreba Wielka. The municipality's center is the village of Niedzwiedz, which existed already in 14 century, originally as a property of the Cistercian Monastery, then it belonged to Ratold, Piniazek, Lubomirski and finally to Wodzicki family. The village lies in the confluence of the streams Konina and Porebianka in a deep valley surrounded by picturesque hills. The name of Niedźwiedź is closely associated with the name of a creek "Myezweza" first mentioned in local documents from the year 1254. Then the name was changed to "Niedzwiedz". The centre of the village is quite compact so it creates interesting, small-town architecture of a market place with 4 streets leading to 4 corners of the world
